Acupuncture : The Basics

Acupuncture is a technique practitioners perform that stimulates key points on the body. The process involves thin needles inserted through the skin in targeted areas to ease pain and discomfort. It is a technique used in traditional Chinese medicine.

Other methods include but are limited to:

  • Heat
  • Pressure
  • Herbs

In order to best determine where to perform the acupuncture, the practitioner will usually perform a thorough examination. There is no one-size-fits-all in the world of acupuncture, making the experience personalized for your body and your needs. Your fist visit can take up to an hour while the practitioner evaluates your situation, but the following visits will likely only take forty minutes. You and your practitioner will develop a schedule that best suits your needs including the plan of action and how frequently you should go.

New studies proving the efficacy of acupuncture are published regularly. The World Health Organization  (WHO) recognizes acupuncture as effective in treating a wide range of common illnesses including, but not limited to:

  • Eye, ear, mouth and throat
  • Respiratory disorders
  • Circulatory and blood disorders
  • Gastrointestinal disorders
  • Gynecological disorders
  • Uro-genital disorders
  • Infertility (male & female)
  • Psychosomatic and psychological
  • Dermatological disorders
  • Endocrine disorders
  • Obesity and weight management
  • Muscle-skeletal disorders
  • Nervous system disorders
  • Pain
  • Addiction and dependence
  • Cosmetic

Acupuncture has the ability to ease you of pain and discomfort in a holistic manner. It is a great alternative if you are staying away from medication and are willing to be dedicated to allowing this method the time necessary to help your body heal sans Western medicine.
